Amul Girl showing new state Telangana on map.

On 2 June 2014, Telangana became the 29th state of India, consisting of the ten north-western districts of Andhra Pradesh. The city of Hyderabad will serve as the joint capital of Telangana and the successor state of Andhra Pradesh for up to ten years. It is India's twelfth-largest state by area and twelfth-largest by population.

The splitting of Andhra Pradesh marks the first time in India's post-Independence history that a "linguistic state" - a state created for speakers of a regional language, in this case Telugu - has been divided.

Telangana has an area of 114,000 sq. km and a population of 35.28 million. Hyderabad, one of the 10 districts of Telangana, is the prized asset of the new region as this technology hub will contribute bulk of the revenues. The city contributed over Rs.34,000 crore ($5.7 billion) to undivided Andhra Pradesh's total revenues of Rs.70,548 crore during 2012-13.

Though Hyderabad will serve as a common capital of Telangana and the residuary state of Andhra Pradesh, its revenues will go to Telangana, of which it is a geographical part. However, outside Hyderabad, Telangana is a backward state.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), formed the first government in the new state and their leader taking some lessons from Amul Girl to make State Joyful.
