Amul Girl as Astronaut in Interstellar in search of suitable planet for humanity.

Iconic sci-fi film creates a sensation, Sci-fi fans who hope humanity can one day zoom to distant corners of the universe via wormholes, as astronauts do in the recent film "Interstellar," shouldn't hold their breath.

In Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar," which opened in theaters around the world earlier this month, its shown that Wormholes are theoretical tunnels through the fabric of space-time that could potentially allow rapid travel between widely separated points — from one galaxy to another.

In Interstellar, Earth is becoming unlivable due to environmental changes and the Oscar winner's character, a NASA test pilot, farmer and widower named Cooper, is recruited for an important mission: To lead a team of astronauts, including one played by fellow Academy Award recipient Anne Hathaway, and take an experimental spacecraft out to space to find a new planet to live on. The movie also deals with time travel.

Anyone interested in learning more about the science of "Interstellar" — which also features gravitational time dilation and depictions of several alien planets orbiting close to a supermassive black hole — can check out Thorne's new book, which is called, appropriately enough, "Science of Interstellar

Iconic sci-fi film creates a sensation

Interstellar clearly falls within the domain of true sci-fi. The producers were clearly inspired by the science, and they even used the time dilation from Einstein’s general theory of relativity to enhance the drama and ask interesting moral questions of the characters. Earth is dying and NASA scientists led by Professor Brand (played by Michael Caine) realize that humanity needs to find another planet to avoid extinction. And just when the situation turns critical, a wormhole magically shows up near Saturn. Who put the wormhole there, and why, is suggested near the end. It enables spaceships to travel to another galaxy, where they enter a region of space near a black hole named Gargantua and about a dozen potentially habitable planets.

Go out to watch great science-fiction.
