Amul Girl drinking milk on National Milk Day declared on Dr Verghese Kurien’s Birth Anniversary.

On Occasion of Dr Verghese Kurien’s 92nd birth anniversary, AMUL is celebrating National Milk Day on 26th November 2014. Dr Verghese Kurien, also famously known as the father of Milk Revolution in India dedicated his entire life to the cooperative movement in India. Due to his faith in farmers of India, India turned from a milk deficit nation to the highest producer of milk in the world.

To celebrate empowerment, self sufficiency and prosperity National Milk Day will be celebrated across the country. R S Sodhi, Managing Director, GCMMF (Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation) says “National Milk Day will be celebrated not just by AMUL but also by various State Dairy Cooperatives and millions of milk producers across the country. Everybody is going to remember contribution of Dr Kurien in making India the largest producer of Milk in the world”.

Today India is ahead of United States in milk production which was achieved due to Kurien’s efforts. It is not just the milk production which increased in the country but many poverty stricken people found a way of livelihood. It was his brains that designed the system and working of milk production.

Amul which was started by Verghese is today the nation’s leading milk producer in the country. There are more organisations which which was started by the pioneer which includes includes Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, IRMA and NDDB. His commendable works got him praises from the then Prime Minister of India, Lal Bahadur Shastri who appointed him as the founder chairman of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1965. He passed away on September 9, 2012 in Gujarat.

Kurien also authored some books including, I Too Had a Dream, An Unfinished DreamThe Man Who Made The Elephant Dance which is an audio Autobiography of Dr. Kurien in the voice of Tom Alter with Audio Foreword by Ratan Tata, in his own voice. Verghese Kurien: The Man with the Billion Litre idea was published in Amar Chitra Katha.
